Following is a report of a recent trip by club member Jeff Rasley to Nepal and the Basa Village Project which he supports:
Dear Friends and Supporters of the Basa Village Project,
I wanted to let you know of our latest efforts for the First Friends Basa
Village Project. In mid October our "philanthro-trekking" group
delivered 5 laptop computers to the Basa Village School, along with 23
pairs of children's shoes and miscellaneous school supplies. Instruction
in basic computer skills was provided to staff and students at the school
by Jeanne and Chris Taylor. Mike Miller, Joel Meyers and I inspected the
hydroelectric system and smokeless stoves, for which the Project and
Miller Family Foundation provided the capital. We were delightfully
impressed with the workmanship of the villagers in construction of the
hydroelectric system and smokeless stoves. Villagers expressed their
appreciation to our group by welcoming us with a cascade of flowers,
singing and dancing, gifts of beautiful katas (silk scarves), and hosting
us in homes throughout the village.

Our trek from Basa to Mera Peak was challenging but was inspiring in the
natural beauty we were able to experience. We trekked through cloud
forests of rhododendron, cypress and pine trees, immense rocky moraines,
bamboo jungles, and, of course, the great white-capped Himalayan
mountains. Our group of 8 trekkers were geographically diverse, hailing
from Switzerland, New Hampshire, Indiana, New Mexico, Seattle and LA. We
developed a close bond with each other and with our staff of Basa guys,
the porters, kitchen staff and guides provided by Adventure GeoTreks.
Our attempted climb of Mera Peak was foiled by a combination of bad
weather and altitude sickness for some (including me). Everyone on the
mountain was driven off by blizzard conditions. Members of our group
helped several porters from other climbing groups down from high camp,
because the porters were at risk of frost bite. Worst of all, a porter
working for another group died apparently from cerebral edema hiking down
from Mera base camp (16,200 ft.). Two of our members tried to render
assistance. The mountains can be cruel, but it is upsetting to witness
hard working porters improperly equipped to handle extreme conditions,
when the clients have all the advantages of modern gear and expensive
clothing. (This is an issue I've been advocating about for some years.
Progress has been made. Rules are in place, but often ignored.) Those
in our group who were able to get up to the Mera Glacier did enjoy
spectacular views of the Everest Massif and the other 8,000 meter peaks
in the Khumbu region of Nepal.
Our trek from base camp to Lukla airstrip took us over the Zatwra La,
which has 2 high passes around 15,000 feet. Climbing down the steep and
rocky mountainside in snow and ice was an adrenaline rush and again, some
of us were called on to help porters carrying heavy loads in dangerous
circumstances.
It was also particularly emotional for me, because 3 porters died in an
avalanche at the Zatwra La when I was hiking down it in 1999. I needed
some time alone to remember those three men. The Himalayas and Nepal are
always a place of extreme beauty and sometimes of horror to my eyes. The
loveliness of its people, their amazing strength and winsome kindness,
draws me back. As do the most awesome vistas on the planet.

year with Adventure GeoTreks.
