The Eiteljorg Museum was recently the recipient of a generous $250,000 gift from the R.B.Annis Foundation. "Project New Moon" is featured in the May 2010 issue of Storyteller, the Museum's Members Magazine. Bob Annis was a long-time member of the Scientech Club and his widow, Elmira, remains an active member.
Four locations will be featured in the B.B. Annis Western Family Experience in the Nina Mason Pulliam Education Center. First, six to 10 year olds will enter the Northwest Coast area to find Totem Pole carver, David Boxley and his family. Children will learn which animals are used in the art and will view family belongings from that era.
Next, guests will travel to the Southwest into a Navajo home to watch a woman weaving wool rugs. There they will learn about Navajo life on the reservation at the base of Table Mesa in New Mexico and investigate items used in their daily routine. Children may try their hand at weaving on the large loom.
From there, visitors will walk into a sod house belonging to an African American family. Children can try their hand at stacking sod blocks to construct a wall of the house. Family mementos such as musical instruments, toys and books can be viewed. In addition, guests will learn all of the many chores that were done in the home every day in the 1870's.
Finally, children will travel to the city of Deadwood in the Dakota Territory. Chinese resident Wong Fee Lee will demonstrate the items for sale in his Emporium: silks, fireworks, imported teas, herbal medicines, clothing and groceries. Visitors can explore the 2001-2004 archeological dig from the Wing Tsue property. Guests can visit the store, ride the stagecoach and try on clothing.
Storyteller closes with this note, "The Eiteljorg Museum is delighted with the opportunity to tell America's stories through unique and diverse experiences of the people who helped build this country. The R.B.Annis Western Family Experience opens on June 19."
